Nose Reshaping
(Rhinoplasty)
The goal of rhinoplasty surgery is to reshape the nose to better fit your face. This may mean reducing a hump on the bridge of the nose, refining the tip of the nose or straightening a crooked nose. Rhinoplasty can also be performed to improve breathing through the nose by straightening a deviated septum.
You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if you have any of the following conditions:
- your nose appears too large for your face
- there is a hump or depression on the nasal bridge when viewed in profile
- the nose seems too wide when viewed from the front
- the nasal tip droops or plunges
- the tip is thickened or enlarged
- your nose is off center or crooked
- you have an airway obstruction that impairs breathing
Rhinoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. A small incision is made on the strip of skin between the nostrils and connected to incisions made inside the nostrils. The underling cartilage and bone is then reshaped and often the septum is repositioned. A splint is applied to the top of the nose which is to be worn for 10 days.
